Canadian actor Peter Donaldson has died after a two-year struggle with cancer.

Reports say Donaldson passed away in a Toronto hospital on Saturday.

This death has been confirmed by Stratford Shakespeare Festival's publicity director. Donaldson lived in both Toronto and Stratford.

The 2011 season would have marked Donaldson's 25th year with the festival. He was best known for his Shakespeare roles.

News of his death spread quickly, with many of his peers sharing their grief.

"Impossible to believe that my friend Peter Donaldson has passed away," tweeted actress and comedienne Andrea Martin. "So deeply sad for his daughters & wife Sheila, who he was devoted to."

Donaldson's wife, Sheila McCarthy, is also an actress. The couple starred together in the television series "Emily of New Moon."

The actor won a 1996 Genie for his role in the film version of "Long Day’s Journey into Night." He also appeared in Atom Egoyan's "The Sweet Hereafter."
