Environment Canada has issued a Winter Storm warning in effect for Waterloo Region and the surrounding areas. Hazardous winter conditions are expected.

A developing winter storm has already begun across Southwestern Ontario and will spread eastward today reaching the Greater Toronto area.

The snow will continue into Monday morning.

A warning has been issued for Waterloo, Wellington, Huron, Perth, Brant and Oxford Counties.

Areas south of a line from Sarnia towards Hamilton, may experience snowfall amounts of 20 to 30 cm.

North of this line from Huron - Perth towards the Greater Toronto area, total amounts will likely be near 15 cm.

Winds will strengthen and become gusty Sunday afternoon and Sunday evening, reducing visibilities to 0.5 km or less in blowing snow.

"It could be a real wallop, winter wallop, for the areas," said Dave Phillps from Environment Canada.

"This storm coming from Colorado is heading more towards the lower lakes, areas north of toronto are not going to be hit as hard," said Phillips.

Environment Canada suggests postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve.

The city of Waterloo says that a full snow plow of Waterloo streets will begin at 2:00 a.m. and overnight parking exemptions for Sunday, February 1, 2015 will not be permitted through to 6:00am Monday, February 2, 2015.

The public is asked to ensure their cars are off the street as soon as possible in order to facilitate safe and quick snow removal.

Cars left on streets during this time may be ticketed and/or towed.
