Here’s a sign of how far construction of the Ion light rail transit system has come in the last few weeks: Roads are starting to reopen.

In downtown Kitchener, Francis Street – which has been closed for the past four months – was scheduled to reopen on Sunday.

The reopening of Francis provides a third option for drivers looking to cross King Street in the downtown, in addition to Queen and Water streets.

While no more reopenings are planned for Kitchener over the next few days, the intersection of Charles Street and Borden Avenue could be back open to traffic by the end of the month.

In Waterloo, short-term closures of two Caroline Street intersections – at Fullerton and Norman streets – are expected to end by midweek, with the intersection of Northfield Drive and Conestogo Road scheduled to reopen Thursday.
