Starting next week, six school buses in Waterloo Region will be equipped with cameras to record drivers illegally passing stopped buses.

While information gathered from the cameras will be shared with police, officials say it will not be used to ticket drivers – yet.

Instead, the data will be used only to help law enforcement and student transportation authorities determine if they want to move ahead with cameras on a more permanent basis.

The cameras will be activated on six buses on Monday, according to Student Transportation Services of Waterloo Region, and will remain activated through the end of the school year.
