KINGSTON, Ont. -- Frontenac OPP say two men are dead after a canoe capsized in the Township of South Frontenac, about 40 kilometres north of Kingston.

Police responded to Bob's Lake (on Mica Point Lane) in South Frontenac, where two men and a three-year-old boy capsized into the water on Saturday at about 8:45 p.m.

Bystanders in nearby cottages were able to safely pull the child out of the water because he was wearing a life jacket, but the two men went under the water and were not located.

A rescue effort was conducted by police, fire and civilians but was called off due to darkness. Police say the bodies of the two men were recovered in the water at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Justin Thomas Butts, 29, and Daniel MacDonald, 23, both of Kingston, were pronounced dead at the scene.

The boy was taken to Kingston General Hospital for observation and later released to family members.
