After extensive consultation the Waterloo Catholic District School Board (WCDSB) has decided not to change school bell times.

The board says it received feedback from more than 7,000 people before deciding to leave daily schedules the same.

The decision applies to both elementary and secondary schools in Waterloo Region.

Changing times could have saved the school system up to $1 million annually, according to the board.

However, concerns about student safety, the impact on learning, daily routines and extra-curricular activities outweighed the cost savings benefits.

Minor changes to scheduling are still possible at individual schools, but none are currently planned.

The Waterloo Region District School Board is meeting Monday night to discuss their plans regarding bell times in the public system.
