A controversial motion to change morning start times for students within Waterloo Region District School Board has been deferred.
The decision came Monday night after a lengthy meeting among the school board and concerned parents and students.
Catherine Fife, a chair with Waterloo Region District School Board, says "There isn't a clear consensus and I think based on the conversations around the table, trustees still have questions and they want answers. That's our responsibility to have that conversation at the table."
Waterloo Region District School Board has been considering earlier start times for elementary school students and start times as late as 9:30 a.m. for high school students. The Board says the proposed changes could mean teens would be more attentive in class and help cut transportation costs.
The Board says it will have to consider how the changes would impact extra-curricular activities, after school jobs, student volunteering programs, afterschool jobs and less family time.
The decision has been deferred until mid-February.
