After extensive consultation the Waterloo Catholic District School Board (WCDSB) and the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) have decided not to change school bell times.

The Catholic board released their decision early Monday.

The board says it received feedback from more than 7,000 people before deciding to leave daily schedules the same.

The decision applies to both elementary and secondary schools in Waterloo Region.

Changing times could have reportedly saved the school system up to $1 million annually, according to the board.

However, concerns about student safety, the impact on learning, daily routines and extra-curricular activities outweighed the cost savings benefits.

Minor changes to scheduling are still possible at individual schools, but none are currently planned.

The Waterloo Region District School Board met Monday evening. At that meeting, the board announced that the trustees voted not to explore the issue of changing bell times any further. The vote was lost on a tie.
