A rainbow Pride flag was ripped off its flagpole in an Ingersoll park and thrown in a nearby garbage can.

Oxford County OPP say the flag was taken down sometime between 3 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Monday from the flagpole in a park at Thames and Charles streets.

The flag was later found in a garbage can in the park, having been damaged.

It had been erected both to commemorate Pride month and in memory of the victims of this month’s mass shooting in Orlando.

Police say they’re investigating the damage as an act of mischief, and at this point aren’t sure who took it down or what their motive was.

“It’s on a main intersection, so I’m sure there were people that did see the flag being removed,” said Const. Lisa Narancsik.

The flag was raised by the local Pride committee. Its members believe the person who took the flag down must have climbed the pole to do it.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
