Waterloo Regional Police say the vehicle involved in last weekend’s fatal hit and run may be a red Dodge Calibre, Jeep Compass, or Jeep Patriot.
The announcement comes five days after Jordan Gillis was found lying in the intersection of Hazel Street and Austin Drive in Waterloo.
The 29 year old suffered severe head wounds in the early-morning incident, and was pronounced dead on the scene.
Officials say the red vehicle believed to be involved likely has damage to the front bumper and hood.
“We really want to appeal to the public, we want to appeal to our auto body repair facilities to be very vigilant,” says Staff Sgt. Scott Diefenbaker.
Witnesses told police they saw the vehicle travelling on Hazel Street toward Columbia around the time of the crash.
Investigators say anyone who owns a vehicle similar to the three models listed above can expect a call.
“We are also startingsome offline searches through the Ministry of Transportation to narrow down those types of vehicles that may be registered in this region or certainly in the area,” says Diefenbaker. “And we'll start through a process of elimination through this list.”
As police continue their investigation, Gillis is being remembered as an athlete with a love of movies and music.
His death is mourned by his parents, sister, brother and friends, as well as his colleagues at BlackBerry.
In a statement, the company says “Jordan was well known amongst his fellow employees for work ethic, his pride in his work and his involvement in the Joint Health and Safety Committee.”
“This tragic event is likely weighing heavily on the mind of the individual responsible,” Staff Sgt. Scott Diefenbaker said in a release. “For the sake of the community, and for the victim’s family, we encourage this person to come forward so that this matter can be brought to a close.”
