The man accused of committing Hanover’s first murder in more than 20 years was formally charged Monday afternoon in a Walkerton court.

Matthew Lantz, 25, is charged with first-degree murder.

Police say he knew his alleged victim, 51-year-old Richard Connor – a former cook at Norm’s Restaurant who stopped working after undergoing hip surgery in 2012.

Little is known about what led to Connor’s death, but OPP say he was found dead in a 9th Avenue apartment Sunday morning, with obvious signs of trauma on his body.

Neighbours say they saw the two men together multiple times over the past few weeks.

A conspicuous police presence remained in Hanover’s streets Monday, as forensic officers were seen taking samples of blood off a street just blocks from the apartment where Connor was found.

“Everybody’s sad. It was a tragedy all around,” says Ian Harris, who lives near the apartment.

Lantz remains in custody with his next court appearance set for Thursday.
