Ice is now breaking up and flowing down the Grand River watershed from Waterloo Region, which has conservation officials on alert for potential ice jams downstream.

In a bulletin issued Tuesday afternoon, the Grand River Conservation Authority said their main area of concern over the next 24 hours will be the Grand River through Brantford and into Cayuga.

As ice flowing downstream passes bends in the river in that area, it may accumulate – causing sudden flooding around the jam.

The risk ends around Cayuga as ice cover around Caledonia and Dunnville isn’t expected to break up by Wednesday afternoon.

While some snow did melt Monday, the GRCA says cooler temperatures will slow the pace of the melt.

Through the southern part of the watershed, water levels are expected to remain high for the next few days.
