Warm temperatures mean the snow melt is underway.

While that news is often accompanied by flooding concerns, officials with the Grand River Conservation Authority say this week’s cool nights have kept water from melting too rapidly for local waterways to handle.

However, water levels and flows will be higher starting this weekend – meaning low-lying areas typically at risk of flooding may see just that.

Ice is also beginning to melt in the river system.

Officials say it’s too soon to tell whether ice jams will form – and, if they do, where that will happen.

The GRCA says it will monitor river conditions closely as conditions change.

People living near rivers and streams are reminded that ice cover on waterways at this time of year is unstable, banks are slippery and water remains very cold.
