Through the first half of the year, Guelph Police say they’ve responded to fewer crashes on city streets than they did in 2014.

Statistics released Friday show that 1,864 collisions involving vehicles were reported to police as of June 30, compared to 2,089 in 2014.

More than half of those crashes occurred during the months of January and February – while, despite warmer weather potentially tempting drivers to put the pedal a bit closer to the floor, June saw only 299 collisions.

Crashes also varied based on day of the week – 421 occurred on Fridays and 420 on Tuesdays – and hour of the day.

The hour between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. saw the most crashes (295), followed by the hour between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. (240).

As for intersections, the corner of Speedvale Avenue and Woolwich Road was the most crash-prone, with 20 collisions reported.

After that, the intersections of Edinburgh Road at Stone Road and Kortright Road at Gordon Street saw 13 collisions each.

Woolwich and Woodlawn roads, which saw more crashes in 2014 than any other city intersection, recorded only 11 in the first half of 2015.

Nineteen collisions involved pedestrians and 15 involved cyclists, police said.
