One person has been taken to hospital after a fire in Guelph.

The fire broke out at the former Holiday Inn Express on Silvercreek Parkway North around noon Friday. The building has been used as a shelter for the past several years.

Fire Chief Brian Arnold said around 22 firefighters responded and quickly extinguished the flames. Residents in four of the units have been displaced, but all have temporary housing solutions, Arnold said.

Police spokesperson Scott Tracey said one male was transported to hospital.

There's no word on how serious his injuries are or what started the fire.

Arnold said the cause is currently under investigation.

A section of Silvercreek Parkway was briefly closed but had reopened as of 12:30 p.m.
