A Waterloo man is in police custody on a murder charge – and police say the victim in the case is his grandmother.

Herma Parkes, 71, was found dead inside her Richmond Hill apartment Saturday morning.

A 23-year-old man was arrested later in the day in connection with her death.

Monday, York Regional Police identified him as Cameron Alexander Mossaddad of Waterloo.

He is charged with second-degree murder.

“The cause of death has been determined, but that’s not information that we’re going to be releasing at this time,” Const. Andy Pattenden said.

Police say they were tipped off to Parkes’ death when Mossaddad walked into Richmond Hill’s history seeking treatment for injuries.

According to a spokesperson for the University of Waterloo, Mossaddad was a student at the school – although he recently left without graduating.
