A car collided with a train and was then pushed along the tracks for about 15 metres Tuesday morning.

It happened shortly before 7:30 a.m., on the rail tracks near King Street East and Riverbank Drive.

Police believe the car drove across the tracks despite active signals warning of an approaching train, at which point it was hit on its passenger side.

The driver of the car, a 21-year-old man from Waterloo, was not hurt.

“He has been charged with disobeying a traffic signal at a railroad crossing,” said Waterloo Regional Police spokesperson Olaf Heinzel.

Riverbank was closed for a period of time as the car and freight train were towed away.

Damage to the car is estimated at $4,000.

No injuries were reported aboard the train.
