An 11-year-old girl in Listowel was approached by a stranger who offered her candy in exchange for her getting into a van, police say.

Perth County OPP say the offer was made around 3:30 p.m. Monday, as the girl was walking home from school.

As she got near the intersection of Main Street and Nichol Avenue, police say, a white van pulled up next to her, a passenger in the van opened up a passenger-side door, and the passenger started talking to the girl.

The girl ran away from the area and told one of her parents what had happened.

Police describe the vehicle as a white passenger van that may be a Ford Econoline, with large side mirrors as well as scratches and rust spots on its passenger door.

The person who spoke to the girl is said to be white and possibly in his 30s. Police say he has a brown beard, and was seen to be in all black clothing including a winter coat, snow pants and a ski mask.
