Waterloo Region’s new taxi bylaw is starting to take shape.

City councillors met Wednesday night. During the meeting they decided to allow ride sharing services to operate in the region.

Both taxi companies and ride sharing services, like Uber, must abide by consumer protection and safety rules.

There is some opposition to this decision.

The Taxi Alliance says the region has basically deregulated the system and does not see this as a good idea.

A final bylaw is expected by June 8, 2016.
