CLARINGTON, Ont. -- A 44-year-old man has been charged after police allege he wore military items and marched with veterans at three different Remembrance Day ceremonies in southern Ontario.
Police say a man was approached by an active member of the Canadian military on Nov. 9 at a Remembrance Day ceremony in Clarington, east of Oshawa.
It's alleged the suspect was wearing a red beret and military-issued medals and was seen marching with veterans and participating in the laying of wreaths.
Police say the active military member questioned the man about his past service and became suspicious as the medals were not consistent with the time served.
Investigators say the same suspect was also seen taking part in a Nov. 8 ceremony in the area and a Nov. 11 ceremony in nearby Bowmanville.
Eric Janssens of Clarington, Ont., is charged with unlawfully wearing a military uniform.
A similar incident at Remembrance Day ceremonies in Ottawa resulted in charges against a 32-year-old Quebec man earlier this month.
Questions were raised about the man after he was interviewed during CBC's live coverage of events near the National War Memorial and police began an investigation.
Franck Gervais of Cantley, Que., faces charges including personating a public officer, unlawful use of a military uniform and unlawful use of military decorations. He's due in court Dec. 9.
