A Kitchener man has been named a recipient of the Ontario Medal for Good Citizenship.

Steven Sanderson is the head custodian at Pioneer Park Public School.

In 2002, after noticing that some students were unable to afford to play organized hockey, he created a program which gives kids free hockey equipment. The program continues to this day.

A total of 19 medals will be awarded by Lt.-Gov. Elizabeth Dowdeswell Thursday night at a ceremony at Queen’s Park.

Other recipients with local ties include Tillsonburg’s George Klosler, a longtime director with the Oxford County Federation of Agriculture, and Jean Campbell of Drayton.

Campbell was a volunteer and advocate for the Drayton Festival, starting with its earliest days.

Her medal is being awarded posthumously.

The Ontario Medal for Good Citizenship is considered to be the province’s second-highest honour for civilians, behind the Order of Ontario.
