A crash that closed part of King Street East in Kitchener was due to a young driver hitting a pole after stealing her grandmother’s car, Waterloo Regional Police say.

Shortly after 3 a.m. Monday, a police officer’s attention was attracted by a car driving down Fairway Road.

“The officer described the vehicle driving in an erratic manner, with no lights on,” said police spokesperson Olaf Heinzel.

The officer then activated his cruiser’s lights and siren, but the driver allegedly failed to pull over.

Two more cruisers then responded, and police say one of them was then sideswiped by the driver as the group moved down King Street East.

The vehicle in question then crossed the sidewalk and slammed into a utility pole near Sportsworld Crossing.

The 12-year-old girl found in the driver’s seat faces a number of charges including dangerous driving and flight from police.

Also facing charges is her 14-year-old passenger.
