Operations have been suspended at a Heidelberg feed mill after a worker was seriously injured at the site.

Emergency services were called to the Jones Feed Mill plant on Lobsinger Line northwest of Waterloo shortly after 9 a.m. Tuesday.

It was not immediately clear whether the man was involved in a workplace accident or suffered a medical incident. He was taken to hospital and later pronounced dead.

The worker’s identity has not been released, but police say he was in his late 60s.

Randy Boyavenue works at another business on Lobsinger Line. He says he noticed the police cars Tuesday morning, but didn’t pay them much attention.

“I did not give it a second thought that there might have been a problem,” he tells CTV.

The provincial Ministry of Labour was initially placed in charge of the investigation but later turned it over to their federal counterparts, who say they’re awaiting findings from a coroner before determining the cause of death.

Operations at the mill have been temporarily suspended while the investigation occurs, but a pet food store next door remains open for business.

The owners of Jones Feed Mill say they do not wish to comment on the situation.
