The House of Friendship is sharing more about its vision to convert its former Kitchener shelter, into a supportive housing community.

New concept drawings offer a glimpse into what Friendship Village, located on Charles Street, could look like.

Concept drawings on the House of Friendship website show a building with multiple units as well as outdoor space for residents to enjoy.

The first phase of the plan aims to create approximately 100 new long-term supportive housing units with on-site health, mental health and addictions supports.

The goal is also to start a community hub of supports for up to 200 residents of both the new space and existing housing.

There will also be new administrative offices for House of Friendship, according to their website.

“This project is part of the solution to Waterloo Region’s housing crisis by providing more than housing – it’s providing a home that will help people exit homelessness for good,” their website reads.

The charity organization is currently fundraising for the initiative.

Demolition of the former Charles Street shelter happened in October 2024.
