Dog dies, 71-year-old pedestrian injured in Waterloo crash

A dog has died and a 71-year-old pedestrian was injured after police say they were both hit by a vehicle in Waterloo on Friday.
Police responded to reports of a collision at the intersection of University Avenue East and Woolwich Street around 8 a.m., involving a Toyota Sienna and a pedestrian.
The woman was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police said she was walking the dog, which died as a result of the crash.
The driver of the vehicle, a 44-year-old woman from Waterloo, was not hurt.
A neighbour, who spoke with CTV News, said his wife heard what happened and saw the aftermath.
“She said she saw someone [get] hit and she's pretty sure the dog was dead," said Paul Barry James Wadsworth. "She thought maybe [the pedestrian] was dragged about 10 feet... it's just kind of shocking.”
The intersection was closed for several hours but has since reopened.
The investigation is ongoing, and charges are anticipated.
Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to contact police.
