A bank robbery in Cambridge earlier this week has some similarities to a series of holdups across Canada, Waterloo Regional Police say – but also some differences.

Around 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, a man allegedly walked into the Bank of Montreal branch on Queen Street, jumped over the counter, grabbed cash and left.

Jumping over the counter is considered one of the signature moves of the so-called ‘Vaulter Bandit’, who is believed to be behind 19 bank robberies across the country over the past five years.

Waterloo Regional Police say it’s too soon to tell if the same person responsible for those robberies was also behind Tuesday’s.

The ‘Vaulter Bandit’ typically wears glasses and doesn’t cover his face, police spokesperson Olaf Heinzel said, while Tuesday’s robber had no glasses and a covered face.

Police describe the person behind the Cambridge robbery as a white man wearing a light-coloured hoodie, blue jeans and light-coloured shoes.

Anyone who saw anything suspicious around the bank Tuesday afternoon is asked to give police or Crime Stoppers a call.
