Waterloo Regional Police searched at a Kitchener home Friday in connection with the death of Erin Howlett, whose body was found in the Grand River in early July.

Police executed a search warrant Friday morning at a home on Chestnut Street, near Victoria and Lancaster streets.

Paul Martell, who also lives on Chestnut, says he saw police outside the home for a couple hours, starting around 10 a.m.

“They were all around the house,” he tells CTV News.

“They were walking from the backyard to the front.”

Martell says he didn’t see police remove any items from the property.

Police spokesperson Olaf Heinzel confirmed that the search was part of the investigation into the death of Howlett, an Elmira resident.

“As part of our investigation, we had forensics officers at that location today to search for any evidence that may assist the investigators in moving this case forward,” he said.

According to Martell, the house is owned by a man who lives on the property and rents some rooms out to others.

Family members say they’re hopeful the search represents a positive sign that will help lead investigators to a conclusion.

“Our family will certainly be happy to hear the investigation is moving forward,” says brother Dane Howlett.

“We love Erin dearly and answers would really help us move on.”

Earlier this week, police released images of a purse similar to one Howlett was carrying when she was last seen and a man who may have information that could help investigators.
