Travellers in Kitchener’s north end were left scrambling after a sudden road closure took effect Thursday.

Margaret Street has been closed between Victoria and Breithaupt streets due to concerns about the structural stability of the overpass bridge.

City officials say a routine inspection of the bridge raised concerns about its structural integrity, leading them to close the bridge as a precautionary measure.

The closure came as a shock to many in the area. Coun. Dan Glenn-Graham tells CTV News he only learned about the closure Thursday.

“This is something that we just found out by accident,” he says.

“No one was hurt, there was no damage to property, and I prefer this story to one where something negative happened.”

Neighbourhood businesses say they’re worried about the effect the loss of traffic will have on their operations.

The closure is expected to last until late July, when the city gets results of a deeper inspection from a consultant.
