The Grand River Conservation Authority is warning rain on Friday could push river levels to flood thresholds, as warm weather continues to melt snow and ice.

The forecast is calling for 15 to 20 mm of rain for Friday, and GRCA staff will continue to monitor water levels.

The above freezing temperatures on Monday and Tuesday have steadily increased snowmelt and runoff throughout the local watershed, and warmer temperatures are expected to continue throughout the week.

Most ice has broken up along the lower half of the river system below Kitchener and New Hamburg, while ice still covers most of the rivers in the upper watershed.

As the ice and snow continue to melt, the GRCA is also warning parents to keep children and pets away from the water. Slippery river banks, combined with cold, fast-moving water pose a serious hazard this time of year.
