Seventeen horses are on their way out of a Grey County farm following complaints over their owner’s ability to care for the animals.

The situation at the farm first came to light earlier this week when a CTV report showed horses at the farm in poor condition. A number of horses have died.

Friday, farm owner Lynda Smith said she would have many of the remaining horses removed.

Smith had previously said she knew the horses were in poor shape, but she loved all of them and was doing her best to care for them.

Ontario SPCA officers were back at the farm Friday, for the second straight day. This time they had a veterinarian with them, and were met by Smith’s agreement to remove some of the animals.

Ten horses were given up to a rescue operation in Hagersville. Five more were released to another farm, and two privately owned horses being boarded at the farm were moved out.

Jerry Dixon, who donated some hay to the farm, says he’s hopeful for a turnaround.

“I see a lot of hard-working people up there,” he tells CTV.

“Things are looking really good.”

The OSPCA says it will continue to monitor the situation at the farm, but remains mum on whether charges will be laid.
