Waterloo Region police say a Cambridge drug store that was robbed on Monday received a suspicious call shortly before the incident.

Waterloo Regional Police Insp. Greg Lamport says "Our concern is that this tactic was used and just to get out to the public that this is something the police would not do."

An investigation has found a caller, identifying himself as a police officer with a badge number, told staff to cooperate and that the man would be arrested after he left the store.

The caller apparently indicated the male was under surveillance and might enter the pharmacy intending to commit a robbery.

Around 6 a.m. on Monday a masked man entered the Shoppers Drug Mart on Hespeler Road, claimed to have a weapon and demanded drugs before leaving on foot.

The suspect is described as a white male, about 6'2" tall with a thin build.

Police are advising businesses that officers would not make that type of call during an investigation and urge anyone who receives questionable information to contact 911.
