An 18-year-old man is dead after falling from a building at the Barrel Yards development in Waterloo.
Police, firefighters and paramedics were called to the area, near Erb Street and Father David Bauer Drive, around 1:20 p.m. Monday for a report of a person without vital signs.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
He was working on a balcony outside one of the top floors of the 23-storey building.
Police are not releasing his identity pending notification of next of kin.
Work was halted at the site Monday afternoon as officials investigated.
Those living in the building – which is occupied up to the 14th floor – were told to move outside.
“The building was evacuated … and the workers were sent home for the day,” said Waterloo Regional Police Sgt. Ian Labelle.
Police and the Ministry of Labour continue to investigate.
Monday’s death marks the second serious incident this year at the Barrel Yards development.
In February, a man in his 20s was airlifted to a Hamilton hospital with serious injuries after being struck by a falling counterweight.
