BRAMPTON, Ont. -- The Ontario government says a Toronto-area courthouse where a man shot a police officer before being killed by police gunfire is set to reopen.
A spokeswoman with the Ministry of the Attorney general says operations at the Brampton courthouse will return to normal as of Monday morning.
Const. Mike Klarenbeek, 53, was providing security at the courthouse Friday morning when an assailant walked in and opened fire, wounding the 30-year police veteran before being fatally shot by police.
Peel Region police Const. Fiona Thivierge says Klarenbeek is in stable condition and is talking to his family as he continues on the "road to recovery."
Police tweeted that Klarenbeek is out of intensive care and is continuing to improve in hospital and that police won't be releasing any more info due to a request for privacy.
A spokeswoman with the province's police watchdog, which is investigating the incident, has said the man shot by police was 46-years-old and believed to be from Brampton. His family has not consented to the release of his name.
The Special Investigation's Unit's Jasbir Brar added that investigators are reviewing the actions of two officers in the incident.
In a statement released this weekend by police, Klarenbeek's wife Lynn said the family is thankful to everyone who has helped, including a nurse who tended to his wounds before paramedics arrived.
The Special Investigations Unit is automatically brought in cases where police are involved in a situation that results in death or serious injury.
