Huron-Perth and Bruce-Grey remain under a blizzard warning with many roads closed as other weather alerts continue across southern Ontario.

The warning also stretches up into central Ontario, affecting areas near Barrie, Port Carling and Bracebridge.

Environment Canada says areas along Lake Huron and Georgian Bay can expect snow squalls totalling as much as 50 cm before conditions start to improve Wednesday morning.

Wind chills in the area continue to make temperatures feel as low as -35 and reduce visibility to nil at times.

Highways and county roads in all four counties were closed Monday night due to white-out conditions, and remained closed Tuesday night.

A few major roads in Perth County were opened for a few hours Tuesday afternoon, but closed once again as poor conditions returned.

A wind chill warning remains in effect for most of southern Ontario, including Waterloo Region, Brant, Oxford, Perth and Wellington counties, Norfolk-Haldimand and areas around Toronto, London, Windsor, Sarnia and Hamilton.

Across that area, wind chills are expected to remain between -30 and -40 through Tuesday night, reaching levels where exposed skin can freeze within five minutes.

Norfolk-Haldimand, along with areas near Niagara Falls and Welland, remains under a wind warning, with winds reported at 60 km/h, gusting at up to 90 km/h.

A snow squall warning that had been in place for Waterloo Region and the Guelph area ended at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday, however a blowing snow warning remains in effect for those regions, as well as Dufferin County and the Caledon area.

Environment Canada warns of near-zero visibilities at times, depending on conditions, gradually improving through the day Wednesday.

Grand River Conservation Authority officials are warning the public to stay away from streams, rivers and other moving water.

“The ice can be very inconsistent. It can have cracks,” says spokesperson Dave Schultz.

“There’s no way of telling from the surface how solid the ice is going to be.”
