Kitchener City Hall was placed into lockdown Tuesday afternoon due to a man who allegedly walked into the building and began making threats to employees.
Waterloo Regional Police say the man entered city hall shortly before 3 p.m.
No weapons were seen on him, and police aren’t saying exactly what the threats were – other than that they were enough for them to place the building in lockdown.
One person who works inside City Hall said employees were told there was a threat and they should lock themselves in their offices until being told otherwise.
Outside the building, police officers were seen with weapons drawn.
A canine unit was also part of the police response, and nobody was allowed to enter the building during the lockdown.
After approximately 45 minutes, the man – who had left the building – was found near Kitchener Collegiate Institute and taken into custody.
Footage from business surveillance cameras in the area helped locate the man, police say.
The man is expected to be charged with uttering threats.
No injuries were reported.
