Remember Margaret Avenue?

For those of you who don’t, here’s a refresher: It’s a street that runs roughly parallel to Weber Street, starting at Queen Street in Kitchener.

It makes its way through Kitchener’s north end and into Waterloo before coming to a stop at Lincoln Road.

People living near Margaret use it to get from one city to the other, while others use it as a quieter alternative to King, Weber or Lancaster streets.

Under normal conditions, that is.

For more than two years, the section of Margaret between Victoria and Breithaupt streets has been closed as the bridge that covers that span was demolished and rebuilt.

The bridge was closed in June 2013 after city engineers concluded that it could collapse without warning.

Now, the new bridge is complete and city crews are preparing it to open to traffic Friday.

Some lane restrictions will remain in effect on Margaret over the next week for paving work on the $5.6-million bridge.
