Paramedics stopped by the family home of a St. George boy battling cancer; the first recipient of a special project.

6-year-old Evan Leversage has an inoperable brain tumour, and may not have much time left if final attempts at radiation don’t work.

On Friday, his single mother received the devastating news that Evan is running out of treatment options.

“There’s a lot of fear within the family and we are preparing ourselves, we just have to pray,” said Nicole Wellwood, Evan’s mother.

Perth County Paramedics hoped to help lift their spirits, with some surprise presents on Saturday; part of a community care fundraising initiative to help give back to patients in need.

Evan has been battling cancer for almost all of his life.

Paramedics Julie Jeffrey and Jeff Sager arrived at Wellwood’s home armed with the presents; the boys got to dress up like their heroes, and were also each given $100 gift cards to Toys R Us.

“I’m truly speechless, given yesterday and everything that we heard regarding Evan, it definitely was a ray of sunshine in our life,” said Wellwood.

The medics presented Wellwood with a cheque to help cover her growing costs of caring for Evan’s medical needs while he continues to fight.

“Having people pulling for him is truly touching,” said Wellwood.

“It’s just nice that we can help her out anyway possible, so helping her out with parking, or food costs,  or just travel back and forth, with gas it all adds up,” said Sager.

“We’re looking at those and saying look, can we help in any other way other than just our normal job or profession?,” said Sager.

“You know we see people at their worst and today doing something like this it just been amazing,” said Jeffrey.

“As a mom, I do want to thank every single person that has prayed for Evan, because truly prayers can never mean enough,” said Wellwood.
