The Canadian National Exhibition shut down a few hours early Tuesday night because of overcrowding and fighting.

The CNE says it was one of its busiest nights due to the popularity of Youth Day, when the price of admission is reduced, and the early closure was a "proactive measure" to curtail overcrowding and ensure the safety of guests.

A large number of police officers on foot and on horseback were deployed to disperse the large crowds.

Constable Craig Brister says there were a number of fights inside the grounds but no injuries were reported and there were no arrests.

Virginia Ludy, the general manager of the CNE, said the trouble began with some people who "ruined it for a larger group of folks."
