LONDON, Ont. -- A man and his dog escaped from their burning van on Highway 401 in London, Ont., after they were alerted to the fire by two passing motorists.

Louie Teixeira says he and a co-worker were heading along the highway Saturday morning when they smelled gas and noticed a fire under the van's motor.

He says his co-worker then rolled down his window and shouted "Your van is on fire!" before the driver of the burning vehicle pulled to the shoulder as flames spread.

The man and the dog got out in time.

One of the highway's westbound lanes was briefly closed as police investigated.
