Const. Jeremy Borda pleaded guilty to discreditable conduct at a Thursday morning Police Act hearing.
In 2011, Borda was one of three officers charged with smoking marijuana in 2009 while not on duty.
“My client has admitted to sharing marijuana at parties that were held in the privacy of his home with other officers attending,” said defence lawyer Bernard Cummins.
Borda, an eight-year member of the Waterloo Regional Police Service, has already been convicted of possession of marijuana in criminal court.
He was given a nine-month probationary sentence for that offence.
Charges that Borda continued to use marijuana after his conviction were dropped as prosecutors believed a conviction on those counts would be unlikely.
“My client has always taken the position that that simply did not occur,” said Cummins.
The case will resume later this year with a disposition hearing.
Cummins says he believes a demotion is an appropriate punishment for his client, who has taken steps toward rehabilitation.
