Two people were hurt Thursday morning in an explosion and subsequent fire at a chicken farm in North Dumfries.

Firefighters were first called to the Branchton Road farm around 7:45 a.m., for medical assistance.

They were told that there had been a propane explosion at the farm, and that one person had burn injuries.

“Shortly thereafter, we received an additional 911 call on a propane explosion with injuries,” Cambridge Fire Department platoon chief David Mawdsley told CTV News.

The first firefighters to arrive at the farm reported that the building was fully involved with fire, and turned their attention to ensuring nearby buildings were not affected.

In all, more than 20 firefighters responded to the property, as did crews from Ayr and St. George.

Two people working inside the barn were taken to hospital with burn injuries.

One of the two was later transported to Hamilton General Hospital due to the severity of their injuries.

There were no animals inside the building at the time of the fire.

The explosion is not believed to be suspicious.

“We’re led to believe that the propane feeding the facility could have been a cause of the actual propane explosion,” Mawdsley said.

The Ministry of Labour and Office of the Fire Marshal have both been contacted.
