A 73-year-old Kitchener man who was hit by a Canada Post mailbox after a chain reaction crash, has died of his injuries.

The crash happened just before 3 p.m. at the intersection of Heiman Street and Highland Road in Kitchener on Thursday.

Police are now searching for a black car, possibly a Chrysler, which left the scene and was last seen heading westbound on Highland Road towards Stirling Avenue; 73-year-old John Gaudet died in hospital, police released images of the car on Monday.

“I don’t understand how somebody could do that,” said Debbie Poll, who saw the crash.

Police believe the driver of a black car was trying to make a left hand turn when the crash happened.

The driver of a blue car swerved to avoid the black car, and as a result, hit a green car that had stopped at a stop sign, which then mounted the curb knocking over the stop sign and striking a mailbox.

Gaudet had been walking on the sidewalk when the mailbox vaulted into him.

“When I first saw him lying beside that mailbox, I just wanted to hold him. It breaks your heart,” said Poll.

“The road is so wide, there is a two lane road, plus the parking, plus the bike lane. It seems to people that it’s a really wide boulevard, so people tend to drive really quick a long here,” said Mike Maybee, a resident of the area.
