A 34-year-old man was killed Monday morning when his minivan collided with a tractor-trailer southwest of Mitchell.

The collision occurred around 11:30 a.m. Monday on Perth Line 20, west of Union Line and west of the community of Russeldale.

According to the Perth County OPP, the minivan crossed over to the westbound side of the road and crashed into the truck head-on.

Both vehicles ended up in opposite ditches along the road.

The van driver was pronounced dead at the scene, and identified later in the day as South Huron resident Barry Edwards.

The driver of the truck, a 58-year-old man from Waterloo, had to be extricated from his vehicle by firefighters and was then taken to a nearby hospital.

The collision also caused the truck’s fuel tanks to rupture and spill onto the road and into the ditch.

Perth Line 20 was expected to remain closed between Line 12 and Town Line Road until late Monday night or early Tuesday morning as police continued their investigation.

There was light blowing snow in the area at the time, police said, but the road itself had been plowed and treated.

Police say they want to hear from any witnesses to the collision.
