Residents of the Breithaupt Park area neighbourhood are growing frustrated that repairs to a barrier that runs along the Conestoga Parkway still haven’t been completed.

It’s been over three weeks since a mini-van crashed through a metal barrier near Edwin Street, leaving it dented and with several large holes. The barrier is next to a busy path that connects area parks. Debris from the accident still litters the area.

“Nobody ever thought you’d see a car coming through a barrier wall,” said Gary Ferguson, who lives in the neighbourhood.

“If somebody had been walking down here, they could have been killed.”

Area residents have been working on getting the wall replaced before the collision. A year and a half ago many signed a petition calling for it to be replaced because of traffic noise. They would like to see a concrete barrier instead.

“It’s clear the fence wasn’t designed to withstand the car going right through it,” said Dan Glenn-Graham, city councillor for the area.

“The first thing is to put it on the radar for the MPP and the MTO. And the second thing is to work with our city staff to make sure that it’s cleaned up at that the trail is safe,” Glenn-Graham said.

So far there isn’t an exact timeframe for when residents can expect to see the repairs completed. Glenn-Graham says he aims to have it done before winter.
