Damage is estimated at $1 million following a fire at a poultry farm in Perth County.

Around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, firefighters from Milverton, Sebringville, Shakespeare and Listowel were called to the farm – located on Perth Road 124 north of Milverton – for a barn fire.

“When they arrived, the structure was fully involved,” fire prevention officer Todd McKone told CTV News.

Inside the barn were approximately 13,000 breeder hens, all of which were killed.

Keith Ament, whose daughter recently purchased the property from him, says it’s the second time in 10 years the barn has been consumed by flames – the cause of a fire there in 2005 was never determined.

“It’s a weird coincidence, because it’s not that dangerous,” he said.

Tuesday’s fire wasn’t fully extinguished until partway through the afternoon.

By that point, the cause of the fire was not clear and the Office of the Fire Marshal had been contacted.

An excavator was also on-site, ripping down the remains of the building.

No humans were injured.
