A Waterloo Regional Police officer has been convicted of obstructing justice.
31-year-old Jeff Vongkhamphou received a suspended sentence, one year's probation and 100 hours of community service work. He admitted to taking and disposing of items including nude photos of a woman, from the alleged locker of his colleague Constable Christopher Knox.
Defence Lawyer Bernard Cummins says "He acted out of blind loyalty to a friend without having the foresight to think about the consequences of his actions."
The criminal proceedings are now finished but the 8-year veteran still faces charges under the Police Act. According to his lawyer Vongkhamphou's job remains in jeopardy.
"The actions to what this officer pleaded guilty to are disgraceful and they in no way represent the values of Waterloo Regional Police Service or its proud members." Inspector Kevin Thaler said.
Constable Christopher Knox is still facing a number of charges including voyeurism and breach of trust. His next court appearance is scheduled for June 4th. Knox faces charges including voyeurism and breach of trust.
Both men, who worked as patrol officers at the Waterloo detachment, remain suspended with pay pending internal disciplinary procedures.
In a written statement, Vongkhamphou expressed deep regret and remorse for what he termed a terrible lapse in judgment.
