Residents along the Highway 6 corridor south of Guelph say they want action on long-dormant plans to divert Highway 6 away from their community.

Talk of a bypass near Aberfoyle, Morriston and Puslinch began back in the 1980s. The Ministry of Transportation approved a bypass plan in the late 1990s, and an environmental assessment was completed in 2009.

But little has been done since then, and residents say they’re fed up with daily traffic jams and loud passing trucks.

“These people here in Morriston really pay a price for living here,” says Dave Haley, a member of a local community group pushing MTO to follow through with the bypass.

Residents say traffic levels have been heavy on the highway for some time, but only seem to be getting worse as the years pass.

“When I come out to the end of my road anywhere close to rush hour, I cannot get across Highway 6,” says Puslinch resident George Harris.

CTV cameras caught 190 cars and 45 trucks driving down Highway 6 through Morriston’s main intersection in a 10-minute span Monday afternoon – before rush hour.

A petition is being circulated to send to the Ministry, calling for the bypass to be shovel-ready within five years.

MTO officials say there’s no firm timetable for the project, citing a need for “additional design work and property acquisition before construction can begin.”
