Police say a car crash into the front entrance of the Maple Grove headquarters in Cambridge was a targeted attack.

Just before 5:30 a.m Sunday morning a grey Dodge Magnum plowed through the front entrance of Regional Headquarters, screeching thirty metres into the lobby before wedging itself between the records desk and a vending machine.

Waterloo Regional Police Chief Matt Torigian says this was a deliberate act, "This is a police facility and [it was] targeted directly by the individual."

Officers wasted no time in cornering and arresting the driver.

Police have charged 37-year-old Bryan Welfred of Tavistock. He was taken to hospital before being taken into custody. Investigators are still checking to see if Welfred has any history with the police.

Despite the shattered glass and debris police say the civilian and uniformed employees working at the front desk did not suffer any injuries.

"Thankfully no one was physically hurt in this incident but as you can imagine it's been extremely traumatic and disturbing for all of us," Torigian says.

Chief Torigian says he will continue to work with the region to assess security measures at existing police buildings.

As for a motive for the incident, investigators have yet to find one.
