Within a few years’ time, city-run activities for older adults in Waterloo could become more centralized at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex.
City councillors voted Monday night to move ahead with a feasibility study looking at moving programming from the Adult Recreation Centre on King Street and Wing 404 RCAFA Rotary Adult Centre on Dutton Drive to the rec complex.
If that were to happen, a report to council says, an addition would be built at the rec complex to house programs for older adults – with room for activities targeted to other age groups “when space allows.”
As part of the same process, the city is looking at a second expansion of the rec complex facility for general community needs.
According to the report, the Adult Recreation Centre and Wing 404 RCAFA Rotary Adult Centre would need about $9 million worth of renovations to stay open for the next 20 years.
The feasibility study approved Monday night is estimated to cost $275,000.
It will include public engagement, and its results will be presented to councillors in late 2017.
