Friends gathered in Guelph today to mourn the loss of Seble ‘Mimi’ Dietrich. The Ethiopian community held a vigil at her home. Her friends are struggling with the news that she was murdered.
“We have been waiting for a long time, almost 11 months,” said her friend Daraje Leyou
“I didn't expect that Mimi would die this way since she is a woman of god. We expected something special from Mimi that we never expect that this would happen,” Leyou continued.
Dietrich disappeared last July. Friends had hoped she would be found alive and well, but on Tuesday police arrested her husband Stephan Dietrich with first degree murder and obstructing a police investigation. On Wednesday police found human remains at her home. Her three children are now in protective care.
“It’s tragic that they lose a mother and then the father on the other side,” Kirubel Abebe said.
Friends left flowers, lit candles and said prayers for Mimi, her children, and the man accused of taking her life.
“We are very hurt with what happened to Mimi. The Mimi we know, she is a faithful wife, dedicated mother, she was a very caring person,” said her friend Abebe Fanta.
“Clearly this brings some kind of closure but more questions need to be answered,” said Kirubel Abebe.
The Ethiopian community is raising money to bring Seble’s mother to Canada for the funeral. They say when that happens they will gather again to grieve with her.
